However, an injury disrupted his progress during the 2025/26 campaign. By the time he was back available, Farke had changed his midfield structure and other players had established themselves in the team.

Longstaff has been involved in only a small amount of league football so far. The latest match data shows he has made two Premier League appearances and played just 12 minutes, with nine minutes coming against Nottingham Forest and another three against Newcastle United. He has yet to score or assist in the league this season.

That is a difficult situation for a player who was signed as an experienced Premier League midfielder.

Interestingly, Longstaff has had much more football in the EFL Cup. He started against Nottingham Forest and played 66 minutes in the 2-0 win, providing an assist. He also started against Chelsea and played another 66 minutes in the 6-3 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

So, there is no question that Farke still sees him as part of the squad.

The bigger question is whether Longstaff is happy with his current role.

Leeds already have a number of united midfielders competing for places, while Ilia Gruev is also working his way towards a return to first-team football after featuring for the Under-21s.

That means Farke could soon have even more options in the middle of the pitch.

Could Longstaff leave Leeds in January?
