How Leeds United began
Leeds United are not a merger of two clubs. Leeds United was formed in October 1919, after the Football League expelled Leeds City over illegal payments to players. City’s assets were sold off on 17 October and, the same day, supporters met and voted to start Leeds United. Leeds United were admitted to the Football League the following spring. Elland Road, the home ground
Leeds have played at Elland Road since the very first season. It holds about 37,600 fans today and is being rebuilt in stages, with planning permission granted in January 2026 to take it to around 53,000. See the stadium guide.
Where the team trains
The first team trains at Thorp Arch, a site off the A1 near Wetherby used by Leeds since the 1990s. More on the training ground page.
Club honours
Three league titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup, two Fairs Cups and more. The full list is on the trophy history page.
Owners and the people in charge
49ers Enterprises, the investment arm of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, took full control in July 2023. Paraag Marathe is chairman. See who owns Leeds United.
