A short history of the stadium
The land was first known as the Old Peacock Ground, named after the pub opposite. Holbeck Rugby Club bought the Old Peacock Ground in 1897. When Holbeck folded, Leeds City took the lease in 1904 and played their first football match there that year. After Leeds City folded, Yorkshire Amateurs briefly used the ground. In 1920, Yorkshire Amateurs sold Elland Road to the new Leeds United for £250, according to the stadium history.
Later changes reshaped the stadium, with work recorded in 1953, 1971, 1994, 2006 and 2011-12. The stands are now named after four club greats: Don Revie, Jack Charlton, Norman Hunter and John Charles.
The stadium expansion

On 8 January 2026 Leeds City Council’s plans panel approved a major expansion. The West and North Stands will be extended and the South Stand altered, taking capacity to as much as 53,000 and making Elland Road a UEFA Category 4 stadium. The club says the ground stays open throughout the work.
Work started in June 2026 with demolition of the West Stand banqueting suite. The July update described a new supporter walkway and work behind the West Stand. These changes support the expansion while the existing stadium remains in use.
