Mark Hateley has told Leeds United supporters to be careful what they wish for. Daniel Farke’s unbeaten side are daring to dream of European football.
The Whites sit fifth in the Premier League table after two wins and three draws from their opening five matches. As a result, they remain one of only five unbeaten teams left in the division. That flying start has even sparked a new chant at Elland Road. Indeed, fans are already singing about getting their passports out for Farke.
But former Leeds striker Mark Hateley believes talk of the Champions League is far too soon. He has urged supporters to lower their sights and trust the process instead.
Mark Hateley Tells Leeds United Fans To Rein It In
Speaking to TEAMtalk, the 64-year-old explained why such lofty ambitions could actually backfire for a club still finding its feet in the top flight.
“They need good fortune,” Hateley said. “I still think it’s early doors to be looking at the Champions League and all that sort of stuff. It can become a dangerous target for a relatively new Premier League side.”
“I think the focus for Leeds has to be on creating an atmosphere and ensuring their team is really competitive. Should I say top 10? I think they are more than capable. But dreaming of anything else, you’ve got to be careful.”

Mark Hateley Points To Coventry City As A Warning
Mark Hateley knows what it means to play at Elland Road. He spent six games on loan there back in 1996. As an example, he pointed to Coventry City as a cautionary tale for promoted sides who get carried away.
“It is still very early days, just look at Coventry so far this season,” he added. “A team coming up from the Championship has to settle in for two or three seasons. Only then can you say: ‘Right, we have a good structure. We have a good plan going forward. Now let’s go and get that quality of player to take us to the next level’.”
“While Leeds have done that this summer, they can’t get ahead of themselves.”
Everything Hinges On Keeping Calvert-Lewin Fit
Hateley also insisted that any European push hinges on one man above all others: Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The striker’s fitness record has long been a concern. The former striker believes Leeds simply cannot afford to lose him for any length of time.
“I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t be a top-10 team this year. But it is all about keeping Calvert-Lewin fit,” Mark Hateley added. “If Calvert-Lewin keeps his shooting boots on, top 10 means you’re on the edge of European football. And they can set themselves up for an even bigger season next time around.”
Mark Hateley’s warning comes as Leeds close in on handing Farke a new contract. Meanwhile, the club are keen to tie down the manager who masterminded their impressive return to the top flight.
What Comes Next For Farke’s Side
For now, though, Farke will simply want his squad back in one piece after the international break. A home clash against Sunderland is up next at Elland Road. Win that, and even cautious voices like Mark Hateley’s might sound less convincing to the Elland Road faithful.
For Mark Hateley, the message is simple: enjoy the ride, but keep expectations in check.
