‘Absolutely Seething’ Jonathan Buchan Reveals Why Former Leeds United Star Was Furious After Newcastle Win

Leeds United produced one of their most impressive performances of the season on Monday night as they defeated Newcastle United 4-1 at Elland Road, but one former Whites defender was still left seriously unhappy by what happened late in the game.

Daniel Farke’s side were excellent for most of the evening and gave the home supporters plenty to celebrate, with Leeds moving up to third place in the Premier League after another strong display.

The atmosphere inside Elland Road was already electric before kick-off, and the players responded with a performance full of energy, attacking quality and confidence.

Lewis Miley’s own goal gave Leeds the perfect start before Jayden Bogle was credited with the second goal in a controversial moment. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s powerful header appeared to be heading in, but the ball clipped Bogle on its way through and the goal was awarded to the Leeds defender.

Calvert-Lewin then got the goal his performance deserved before half-time, putting Leeds 3-0 ahead and leaving Newcastle with a huge problem after just 45 minutes.

Noah Okafor added another excellent goal after the break to complete a fantastic night for the Whites.

However, Leeds were unable to finish the match with the clean sheet that their performance deserved.

Bazoumana Toure scored a late consolation for Newcastle, and while the goal did nothing to change the result, it clearly annoyed some members of the Leeds camp.

Former Leeds defender Aidy White was reportedly one of those who could not hide his frustration.

Aidy White could not hide his frustration

For most Leeds supporters, the late goal was little more than a small disappointment on an otherwise brilliant evening.

The result had already been secured, the three points were safe and Leeds had produced a performance which showed why they are now sitting among the leading teams in the Premier League.

But former Leeds defender Aidy White apparently saw things differently.

BBC Radio Leeds commentator Jonathan Buchan explained on the Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet podcast that White was particularly unhappy when Leeds allowed Newcastle to score their late goal.

Buchan described White as being “seething” about the goal, with the former defender’s reaction being linked to his defensive mentality.

It is easy to understand why a former defender would focus on that moment.

Leeds had controlled Newcastle for large parts of the match and had built a four-goal advantage. From a defensive point of view, conceding when the game was already almost over meant losing the opportunity to finish the night with a clean sheet.

The goal did not cost Leeds anything in terms of points, but it was still a moment that would have frustrated people who demand high standards from the team.

Calvert-Lewin had been one of the biggest stars of the evening, causing Newcastle’s defence problems throughout the match. The striker was difficult to handle and could arguably have scored even more than once.

Leeds also had several other strong performers, while Newcastle struggled to deal with the intensity and quality of Farke’s team.

That made the late goal even more frustrating for the defensive-minded figures watching on.

Farke shows the same mentality after Newcastle goal

White was not the only former or current Leeds figure who was unhappy with the concession.

Farke was also visibly frustrated when Newcastle finally found the net.

The Leeds boss was seen looking unhappy on the touchline after Toure’s late goal, while he was also involved in an animated conversation with captain Ethan Ampadu after the final whistle.

That reaction says a lot about the standards Farke wants to maintain at Leeds.

It would have been easy for the manager to simply celebrate a 4-1 victory and forget about the final few minutes. Leeds had already produced an outstanding performance and the result had never really looked in serious danger.

Instead, Farke appeared focused on the small details that could become important in a much tighter match.

Against Newcastle, conceding one goal at the end did not matter because Leeds had already built such a big lead. In another Premier League game, however, switching off for even a short period could potentially have a much bigger impact.

That is why Farke’s reaction should not be seen as taking anything away from the performance.

The German will know that Leeds cannot dominate every opponent in the same way, and there will be matches where one defensive mistake or one late goal could change the result.

For now, though, the biggest story remains Leeds’ outstanding 4-1 victory and their rise to third place.

The performance gave the Elland Road crowd another reason to believe in this team, while Farke’s reaction after the late goal showed that the manager is still demanding more even when his side have produced a huge win.

Leeds now have the confidence, attacking threat and defensive standards to build on this result, but the message from Farke and White is clear: the job is not finished until the final whistle, and every clean sheet matters.
