Leeds United Star Faces Fresh Call-Out in Live Press Conference Amid National Team Row: “He Went Public”

by Alex Matthews

Leeds United forward Noah Okafor is back in the headlines after comments from Switzerland manager Murat Yakin reopened a debate that has followed the player for much of his international career.

The 26-year-old winger enjoyed an excellent end to last season at Elland Road and played a key role in helping Leeds remain in the Premier League. After a difficult start following his arrival, Okafor found confidence during the second half of the campaign and became one of Daniel Farke’s most important attacking players.

His form for Leeds was so impressive that it earned him a return to the Switzerland national team setup, and he was later included in Murat Yakin’s final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, events during the tournament appear to have changed the relationship between player and manager once again.

Okafor announced several weeks ago that he was retiring from international football, and ahead of the latest international break, Yakin has now spoken publicly about the decision.

Noah Okafor’s Leeds form earned him a World Cup place

There were times last season when Noah Okafor struggled to make a major impact for Leeds United, but his performances improved significantly as the season progressed.

The winger became an important attacking threat for Daniel Farke’s side, scoring valuable goals during the final months of the campaign. Those contributions helped Leeds secure their Premier League status and also reminded Swiss supporters of the quality that Okafor can bring when he is fully fit and playing with confidence.

His reward was a place in Switzerland’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Many expected the Leeds star to play a bigger role at the tournament, but things did not work out that way.

Okafor made only limited appearances during the competition and finished the tournament with just 19 minutes of football. He did not start a single match, which led to questions about his role in the squad.

When he later announced his retirement from international football, Okafor suggested that certain expectations had not been met. However, the player also explained that his decision was not simply about a lack of minutes on the pitch.

Murat Yakin responds to Okafor decision

Ahead of Switzerland’s latest matches, Murat Yakin was asked about Okafor’s retirement and gave a clear response.

The Swiss manager explained that he welcomes honest discussions with players, but believes those conversations should remain private. Yakin also pointed to competition for places in the squad and suggested that younger players are ready to take their opportunities.

Yakin made it clear that every player must earn a place through performances and added that there are several motivated options available in attacking areas.

The latest comments show that the relationship between Okafor and the Switzerland manager has remained difficult for some time. There have been disagreements in the past, and although both sides appeared to move forward before the World Cup, tensions seem to have returned.

For Leeds United supporters, the situation may not be entirely negative. Without international commitments, Okafor can now focus fully on club football and continue building on his strong form at Elland Road.

The timing could also be important for Daniel Farke. Leeds have started the new campaign positively, and an in-form Okafor could be a major weapon as the Whites look to establish themselves in the Premier League.

Okafor already opened his league account earlier this week, and that goal could be the start of another productive period for the forward. If he can maintain the level he showed towards the end of last season, Leeds supporters will hope that his full attention on club football brings even more goals in the months ahead.
