Leeds United Fans Could Be in for Huge Adidas Boost as Major Kit Upgrade Emerges

by Alex Matthews

Leeds United could be in line for another major boost off the pitch after their excellent start to life back in the Premier League, with Adidas reportedly considering an upgrade to the club’s kit and merchandise status.

Leeds fans have already had plenty to celebrate after the club’s impressive 4-1 victory over Newcastle United, but there could now be another reason for supporters to get excited.

The club’s relationship with Adidas appears to be developing, with an unusual option appearing on the official Leeds United website during the summer. Supporters were briefly given the chance to buy an Authentic Leeds shirt, which is the type of shirt normally made for and worn by professional players.

The option was later removed from the website, but its short appearance could be an important sign of what Adidas is planning for Leeds in the future.

Adidas works with some of the biggest clubs in European football, including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Arsenal. These clubs sit in Adidas’ top ‘Elite’ category, which gives them access to a much wider range of products and commercial opportunities.

Leeds are not currently at that level, but the latest developments suggest they could be moving closer.

Main reason for interestLeeds’ large fanbase and improving Premier League performances

Leeds could be moving up the Adidas ladder

Adidas does not give every club the same level of attention. Its biggest partners are placed in the Elite category, with those clubs receiving a much wider selection of kits, training products and lifestyle clothing.

That is why the potential move for Leeds could be important.

A club’s commercial value, worldwide support and performances on the pitch can all help decide how much attention it receives from a manufacturer. Leeds already have a huge and loyal fanbase, while their return to the Premier League has given the club another chance to grow its profile.

The latest suggestion is that Leeds could be considered for ‘Local Elite’ status, a level which has been given to clubs such as Newcastle and Celtic in recent years.

It would put Leeds much closer to the biggest Adidas clubs in Europe and could eventually give the club access to a much wider selection of products.

The Authentic shirt appearing on the Leeds website is particularly interesting because it was not simply another standard replica shirt. Authentic shirts are designed to be much closer to the versions used by professional players.

The fact that the option appeared and was then removed does not confirm that a deal has been finalised, but it has certainly raised questions over whether Adidas is preparing something bigger for Leeds supporters.

Leeds fans could get more than just a new shirt

An Adidas upgrade would not only be about having another version of the home shirt.

One of the biggest possible changes would be the introduction of Authentic Clima-cool shirts, giving supporters access to more advanced player-style products.

Leeds could also benefit from larger merchandise collections, with Adidas potentially giving the club more clothing and training options throughout the season.

Another exciting possibility is the famous Lifestyler range.

These collections are usually inspired by older football kits and club history, while also being designed as modern casual clothing. For a club with Leeds’ history, that could give Adidas plenty of opportunities to create retro-inspired shirts, training tops and other lifestyle products.

Leeds have already seen Adidas produce some interesting products for the club, including unique trainers and retro-style training ranges. A move towards Local Elite status could take that relationship to another level.

The third kit could also become more interesting for supporters.

At present, Leeds’ third shirts do not have the same level of experimental design that is often seen with Adidas’ biggest clubs. An upgrade could give Adidas more freedom to produce a shirt with features and ideas created specifically around Leeds United.

For supporters, that would mean more choice and potentially a much bigger Leeds collection to buy from.

Strong results could help Leeds’ commercial growth

The timing of the potential Adidas development is also interesting.

Leeds have returned to the Premier League with the aim of establishing themselves at the highest level, and their performances have already created plenty of excitement around Elland Road.

The recent 4-1 victory over Newcastle was another strong statement from Daniel Farke’s side, while the club’s growing confidence has helped create a positive feeling among supporters.

Leeds’ large fanbase is already one of their biggest commercial strengths. If the club can continue performing well in the Premier League, their value to Adidas could become even greater.

However, it is important to make clear that an official promotion to Local Elite status has not been confirmed.

The brief appearance of an Authentic shirt and the wider range of Adidas products being developed for Leeds are the main clues behind the latest speculation.

Still, the possibility will be welcomed by Leeds supporters.

After years away from the Premier League, the club now appears to be growing both on and off the pitch. If Leeds continue their progress under Farke, an Adidas upgrade could be another sign that the club is starting to regain its place among the bigger names in English football.

For Leeds fans, the prospect is simple: better performances on the pitch could soon be followed by a much bigger choice of Adidas products off it.
