Leeds United Handed £25M Transfer Route to Land Ideal Joel Piroe Replacement

by Alex Matthews

Leeds United are facing another important decision in the final part of the summer transfer window, with Joel Piroe’s expected departure leaving Daniel Farke needing another striker.

The Whites have already made major changes to their squad after returning to the Premier League, but the work is not finished yet. The club has added quality in several areas, while some players who are no longer central to Farke’s plans are moving on.

Piroe is one of those players.

The striker looks set to leave Elland Road for West Ham, with the proposed deal including an obligation to buy. That would bring an end to a two-year spell in Yorkshire which started with plenty of goals but finished with limited opportunities.

And according to recent reports, Leeds could already have a replacement in mind.

Stuttgart striker Ermedin Demirovic has once again emerged as a potential target, with the Bosnian international offering a very different profile from some of the other forwards Leeds have considered this summer.

A reported £25m could be enough to convince Stuttgart to sell. For Farke, that could be a price worth paying.

Joel Piroe transfer news: Why Leeds are ready to move on

The story of Joel Piroe Leeds fans know is a mixed one. Leeds signed Piroe from Swansea City for around £10m in 2023, hoping his goals would help the club return to the Premier League. He delivered.

During his two Championship seasons, Piroe scored 16 goals in his first campaign and 19 in the next, giving him 35 goals across those two league seasons.

His goals were a major reason Leeds were able to compete at the top end of the Championship. However, his role changed dramatically after promotion.

Piroe struggled to get regular minutes in the Premier League last season, starting just two matches and playing only 246 senior minutes.

His only goal came in the FA Cup. With Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha ahead of him in Farke’s plans, Piroe’s path into the starting XI became extremely difficult.

That explains why the latest Joel Piroe transfer news is not a huge surprise.

A move to West Ham would give him the chance to play regular football again, while Leeds would remove another player who no longer has a clear role in the squad. Piroe deserves credit for what he did before promotion.

Whether it was a Leeds FA Cup appearance or a Championship match, he proved that he could be a reliable goalscorer for the club. But Leeds now need to think about the future.

Leeds United could turn to £25m Demirovic

This is where Ermedin Demirovic becomes an interesting option. The Stuttgart striker has reportedly returned to the Leeds radar as the club search for another forward.

The 28-year-old Bosnian would also have a familiar face at Elland Road if the move happens, with Tarik Muharemovic already joining Leeds this summer.

There is no guarantee Stuttgart will agree to sell, but previous reports suggest that a fee of around £25m could make the transfer possible.

That would represent another sizeable investment from Leeds, but the striker’s recent record gives plenty of reasons to consider it. Demirovic has scored 29 goals across the last two seasons.

He has also gained experience in European competition, including the Champions League and Europa League. That experience could become increasingly important if Leeds continue to develop as a Premier League club.

The dream for the Whites is not simply to survive. The long-term ambition is to become a regular top-half team and eventually compete for European football.

That makes a striker with experience outside domestic football an attractive proposition.

The phrase champions league premier league may sound ambitious for Leeds right now, but the club’s recruitment strategy suggests they are thinking about building a squad that can grow over several seasons.

Demirovic’s numbers make the transfer interesting

Demirovic’s statistics from last season are another reason Leeds could be interested. He scored 12 league goals in Germany and averaged around 1.3 shots on target per 90 minutes.

His shot-on-target accuracy was also around 54%. Both figures put him in the top 15 per cent of strikers across Europe’s top-five leagues.

That is a strong indication that his goalscoring ability is not simply based on getting lucky with chances. He is also capable of functioning as a proper focal point.

Demirovic won around 1.9 aerial duels per 90, putting him above 70 per cent of centre-forwards in the Bundesliga. That could be important for Farke.

Leeds have already shown that physicality and direct play can be useful parts of their game, and having a striker who can compete in the air gives the manager another route into the final third.

But Demirovic is not only a target man. His reported 55 per cent dribble success rate shows that he can also carry the ball and attack defenders.

That combination could make him a more complete option than simply bringing in another back-up striker.

This could be a smart Premier League transfer

Leeds do not need another striker simply for the sake of having numbers. They need somebody who can genuinely compete for minutes.

Calvert-Lewin remains the main option, while Nmecha can provide depth, but losing Piroe would leave Farke with another gap to fill.

Demirovic could solve that problem. He has the physical qualities to lead the line, the movement to attack spaces and the goalscoring record to suggest that he can make an impact.

A £25m investment would not be small, especially after Leeds have already spent heavily this summer. But the club have also improved their financial position through several permanent sales, giving the 49ers more flexibility in the market.

This is why the latest Leeds United transfer news and Leeds transfer rumours around Demirovic are worth watching closely.

Piroe’s departure could be the trigger for another major Premier League transfer.

The club has already shown that they are willing to move quickly when the right player becomes available.

For Piroe, his time at Leeds will always be remembered for the goals that helped the club fight their way back to the top flight.

But football is about moving forward.

If Leeds can replace those goals with a striker like Demirovic, the decision to allow Piroe to leave could ultimately prove to be another smart part of the rebuild.
