Jaka Bijol’s 14 defensive contributions help Slovenia hold Scotland to 0-0 draw

Jaka Bijol helped Slovenia open their Nations League campaign with a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against Scotland on Saturday 26 September. The Leeds United centre-back started in Ljubljana and put in a busy defensive shift as the hosts held on for a point.

According to Leeds United’s match report, Bijol recorded a match-high 14 defensive contributions: eight clearances, three blocks, two interceptions and one tackle. He also had 53 touches, completed 29 passes and won four duels. Those numbers describe his involvement, not the entire game: Scotland created chances after the break, but Slovenia kept them out.

Bijol’s international minutes matter for Leeds

The 27-year-old was named in Slovenia’s September squad after making four appearances in all competitions for Leeds this season, the club said on 15 September. He has captained his country before, including in March. A clean sheet against Scotland is useful match experience, though it does not by itself settle his place in Leeds’ next starting line-up.

Bijol is due another opportunity with Slovenia when they host North Macedonia on Tuesday 29 September at 7:45pm BST, according to Leeds United. The schedule then takes Slovenia to Switzerland on 3 October and to Scotland for the return fixture on 6 October.
