Leeds United Summer Signing Gives Farke Easy Decision after Nightmare Chelsea Display

Leeds United’s Carabao Cup campaign came to a painful end on Tuesday night as Daniel Farke’s side threw away a two-goal advantage before suffering a dramatic 6-3 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Whites had started the game in excellent fashion and looked capable of reaching the next round after taking control of the contest. However, Chelsea turned the match around with four goals during a crazy 12-minute period in the second half, leaving Leeds with no chance of progressing towards the Carabao Cup finals.

For Daniel Farke, the result was disappointing, but the game also gave him an important opportunity to look at some of his squad players.

The Leeds boss made eight changes from the side that had drawn 1-1 with Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League. Only Ethan Ampadu, James Justin and Tarik Muharemovic kept their places, while Michael Zetterer and Melvin Bard were both handed full debuts.

Zetterer in particular had plenty to prove.

The German goalkeeper joined Leeds from Eintracht Frankfurt for €5m during the summer and arrived at Elland Road Leeds with the job of competing with James Trafford for the starting goalkeeper position.

Unfortunately for the 31-year-old, his first major opportunity did not go according to plan.

Zetterer would have known that a strong performance against Chelsea could give Farke something to think about when selecting his Premier League team.

Instead, his display has arguably made the manager’s decision much easier.

The goalkeeper conceded six goals during his 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge, with FotMob giving him a rating of just 4.0. That made him the lowest-rated player on the pitch according to the statistics provider, while Leeds winger Daniel James was the next lowest with a 5.3 rating.

Zetterer did make two saves, including one from inside the penalty area, but he was unable to prevent Chelsea from completing their remarkable comeback.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt player will also know that he could have done more for two of the goals. Cole Palmer’s second goal and Danny Welbeck’s effort were both moments where Zetterer will feel he should have produced a better response.

That is particularly frustrating because this was the perfect opportunity for him to show that he could push Trafford for the No.1 shirt.

His distribution was not completely poor, with Zetterer completing 33 of his 45 passes. However, his long passing was less convincing, as only seven of his 17 long balls found their target.

The bigger concern was what happened at the other end of the pitch.

A goalkeeper can sometimes be protected by a poor defence, and Farke himself pointed towards the penalty decision and the momentum shift when explaining the collapse. The Leeds boss described the match as a “crazy game” and felt the penalty awarded in the 53rd minute changed the direction of the contest.

Still, Zetterer needed to make the most of his own opportunity.

Instead, his performance has left him behind Trafford in the goalkeeper battle.

Farke now has a simple decision at Leeds

The situation is quite clear for Leeds United Daniel Farke.

Trafford remains the club’s major goalkeeper investment after Leeds spent £45m on the England international. That price tag already placed significant pressure on the former Burnley goalkeeper, but his performances since arriving have given Farke plenty of reason to trust him.

Zetterer was brought in to provide competition rather than simply sit on the bench, and that competition is important for a club looking to establish itself in the Premier League.

However, the Chelsea game was supposed to be Zetterer’s chance to show that he could genuinely challenge Trafford.

He failed to take it.

That does not mean the German goalkeeper is suddenly a poor player. He has plenty of experience and will have difficult nights during his career, particularly against a strong Chelsea team at Stamford Bridge. But the timing of this performance is unfortunate because it came when he had a clear chance to impress his manager.

With Leeds now eliminated from the Chelsea Carabao Cup clash, opportunities for Zetterer could become much harder to find.

Unless Trafford suffers an injury or Farke decides to make an unexpected change, the German could now have to wait until the FA Cup arrives in January before getting another meaningful chance to play.

That makes the Chelsea defeat a missed opportunity rather than simply a bad night.

Leeds will now turn their attention back to the Premier League, with the next challenge coming against Newcastle United on Monday. Farke is likely to return to his strongest XI, meaning Trafford should be back between the posts.

Leeds already have two senior options in Trafford and Zetterer, and the club clearly intended the German to push the younger England international.

But competition only works when the challenger performs well enough to make the manager think twice.

There were other problems for Farke to consider after the defeat.

The manager rotated heavily, and the collapse showed that there remains a difference between some of his regular starters and the players waiting for opportunities. Melvin Bard also endured a difficult debut, while Daniel James struggled in an unfamiliar right-wing-back role.

Even so, Zetterer’s position deserves particular attention because of the importance of the goalkeeper role.

A strong No.2 can make a huge difference over a long season. Injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion can quickly force a manager to change his team, especially if Leeds are eventually competing across the Premier League and the Chelsea FA Cup route or other cup competitions.

Zetterer therefore still has time to prove himself.

The Leeds United sign of the summer transfer window may not be decided by one difficult evening, and Farke will know that goalkeepers need confidence and regular football to perform at their best.

But for now, the evidence points towards Trafford remaining the undisputed first choice.

The £45m signing has already established himself as Farke’s preferred goalkeeper, and Zetterer needed a much stronger performance to change that situation.

The six goals conceded against Chelsea will not help his case.

Leeds supporters will be hoping the defeat does not have any lasting impact on their league campaign. The club still has plenty to play for at Leeds United Elland Road, and the main target must now be collecting Premier League points rather than worrying about the Chelsea cup defeat.

There will be no Carabao Cup final appearance this season, but Farke can use the experience as another lesson about his squad.

For Zetterer, the message is even clearer: the next opportunity has to be much better.

If Trafford continues to perform well, the German goalkeeper may have to wait patiently for his next chance. But when it arrives, he will need to show the qualities that convinced Leeds to pay €5m to bring him to Yorkshire in the first place.

At the moment, the goalkeeper battle at Leeds is not much of a battle at all.

Trafford has the advantage, and after Stamford Bridge, Zetterer has plenty of work to do if he wants to change that.
