Farke Favourite Could Lose Leeds United XI Spot to New Signing after Chelsea Opportunity

Leeds United could hand new signing Melvin Bard his first chance to impress when Daniel Farke’s side travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

The biggest question for Leeds supporters will be whether Bard can eventually do enough to challenge Gudmundsson for a regular place in the starting XI.

Gudmundsson has generally done a solid job since becoming part of the Leeds squad, but his position does not look completely protected. The arrival of a natural left-footed full-back with considerable experience could push him to another level.

Bard has already played 168 times in Ligue 1, which is a strong number for a 25-year-old defender. He has also experienced Champions League and Europa League football and has represented France, giving him a level of experience that could prove useful during Leeds’ return to the Premier League.

His numbers from last season also show why Leeds were interested in bringing him to Elland Road.

The Frenchman completed 52 tackles, putting him joint-10th among Ligue 1 defenders. He was also joint-ninth for successful dribbles with 16 and ranked sixth for interceptions after making 40.

Bard was not only involved in defensive work either. He created five big chances and produced 15 accurate crosses, showing that he can provide an attacking threat from the left.

That could be particularly useful for Farke because Leeds need their full-backs to contribute in possession as well as remain reliable when defending.

Bard is comfortable carrying the ball forward and has the ability to play higher up the pitch when Leeds use a wing-back system. His pace and ability to take on opponents could also give Farke another way of attacking teams that sit deep.

Bard’s numbers give Gudmundsson a real fight

A comparison with Gudmundsson’s numbers from last season makes the competition even more interesting.

Bard scored twice in the league, while Gudmundsson failed to score, although the Swedish international actually recorded a slightly higher expected goals figure at 1.10 compared with Bard’s 1.07.

The Frenchman also finished the campaign with one assist, while Gudmundsson had none despite registering an expected assists figure of 2.75.

Defensively, Gudmundsson had a small advantage in tackles, winning 2.0 per game compared with Bard’s 1.8. However, Bard had the better figures in several other areas, including interceptions, blocked shots and avoiding being dribbled past.

There is also an important context behind Bard’s numbers.

Nice were involved in a difficult relegation battle last season and eventually avoided dropping into Ligue 2 by winning a relegation play-off against Saint-Etienne. That means Bard was producing those numbers while playing in a side under serious pressure.

Leeds also had to fight to stay in the Premier League last season, but ultimately had a more comfortable outcome than Nice.

For now, it’s too early to say Bard has moved ahead of Gudmundsson. The Swede remains the more established option in Farke’s team and has already shown that he can handle the demands of Premier League football.

But Wednesday’s trip to Chelsea could give Bard a very important opportunity.

A strong performance at Stamford Bridge would give Farke something to consider immediately. It could also show Leeds supporters that the club has not simply signed another squad player, but has brought in someone capable of fighting for a starting role.

The competition could ultimately benefit everyone involved. If Bard pushes Gudmundsson for his place, the Swedish defender will have to maintain high standards, while Farke will have two genuine options to choose from.

With Leeds facing a demanding Premier League campaign alongside cup football, having quality depth at left-back could become extremely important.

The Chelsea match therefore represents more than just a possible debut for Bard. It could be the beginning of a battle for one of the most important positions in Farke’s side, and Leeds fans will be keen to see whether their new French signing can make an immediate statement.
