Daniel Farke has admitted he was disappointed to see Leeds United lose their first pre-season friendly of the summer, but the German manager had “no complaints” after his side went down 3-2 to Wrexham in Tampa.
Leeds started their summer trip to America with a defeat, but the result was not the main concern for Farke.
The Leeds boss was forced to work with a weakened squad because several senior players were unavailable. Some were carrying small injuries, while others had only recently returned from international duty.
This meant Leeds had to give valuable minutes to several young players.
For Farke, the friendly was more about fitness, getting players back on the pitch and building towards the new Premier League season.
Wrexham had already played two pre-season matches before facing Leeds, while the Whites were coming into their first game of the summer. That difference was clear early on, with Wrexham scoring almost immediately.
However, Leeds did not allow the poor start to ruin their evening.
The Whites fought back and showed enough quality to suggest that Farke has plenty of positive things to work with.

Leeds were missing several important players
The result has to be looked at in the right way.
Leeds were without several senior players, which left Farke with a difficult team selection.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin was not ready to play after suffering a small setback in his recovery. The striker is now working towards returning to full team training.
Jaka Bijol was also unavailable because of a knee problem, while Sebastiaan Bornauw was not risked because of a minor issue.
There were also players missing because of their World Cup involvement.
Gabriel Gudmundsson and Tarik Muharemovic returned to the training camp later than some of their team-mates, meaning they were not involved against Wrexham.
Ilia Gruev is another player still working towards full fitness after his knee injury. All of this meant that Farke had to give opportunities to several young players.
Alfie Cresswell started at centre-back, Jayden Lienou played at left-wing-back and Callum Mills was given a chance in attack. For these youngsters, it was a huge moment.
They were playing against a Wrexham side that was already further ahead in its summer preparations, making the challenge even harder.
Farke was clearly disappointed that they could not celebrate their big opportunity with a victory. But he also believes the young players can take plenty from the experience.
Leeds showed enough to make Farke happy
Despite the final score, Leeds had plenty of good moments during the match.
The Whites had more of the ball and created many chances. Joel Piroe missed a penalty before making up for it with a clever back-heel finish.
Sean Longstaff also impressed and was one of the best players on the pitch. The midfielder found the net from just inside the box as Leeds fought their way back into the game.

The score was level at 2-2, and Leeds looked capable of going on to win the match.
However, Wrexham found a late winner with just five minutes remaining. For Farke, the result was frustrating because he felt Leeds had done enough to deserve more.
The manager also admitted that his players were tired.
Leeds had been working hard during their training camp, with the players completing almost two sessions every day. They even had another training session on the morning of the match.
That level of work is designed to build fitness, but it can also leave players feeling heavy during the first friendly. This is why Farke is not too worried about the defeat.
The main goal is to make sure the squad is ready when the Premier League season begins.

Farke explains what Leeds need from pre-season
The Leeds manager has made it clear that pre-season is about much more than winning friendly matches.
Farke wants to build the physical base that will help his players compete across a long Premier League campaign. Last season showed how important fitness can be.
Leeds will need to be ready for a demanding season, and the manager believes the work being done now could make a major difference later.
The other important task is bringing new players into the group.
New signings need time to understand their team-mates and learn the manager’s ideas. That is why spending time together during a training camp is so valuable.
Farke wants his players to communicate better, understand their roles and build the type of team spirit that can help them when the pressure arrives.
There is also plenty of tactical work to be completed. The Wrexham match was only the beginning.
Leeds still have more friendlies to play during their summer trip, and Farke will use those games to increase the minutes of his senior players and give more chances to the younger members of the squad.

The defeat could still be useful for Leeds
Losing 3-2 is never what a manager wants, but Farke’s reaction shows that Leeds are looking at the bigger picture. The manager knows his team was not at full strength.
He also knows that the players are in the middle of a heavy training schedule. Most importantly, there were positive signs in the performance.
Leeds created chances, controlled large parts of the game and showed character after falling behind early.
The young players also gained valuable experience. For Farke, that is what pre-season is all about.
The Leeds boss will now want to see his senior players return to the group, while those recovering from injuries will continue working towards full fitness.
There is no need for Leeds supporters to panic over the result. The real test will come when the Premier League season begins.
For now, Farke is focused on building a strong foundation, improving his squad’s fitness and making sure his new players settle into the team.
The defeat to Wrexham may not have been the perfect start, but the bigger picture remains positive. Leeds still have time to prepare.
And with more senior players expected to return, Farke will hope the next friendly brings even more signs that his squad is moving in the right direction.
