Leeds United Could Make Late Move for £13.7M Striker as Deadline Race Heats Up

Leeds United are looking at a late opportunity to strengthen Daniel Farke’s attack, with RB Leipzig forward Conrad Harder emerging as an option before the transfer window closes.

The Whites have already been busy this summer, bringing in Harry Wilson, James Trafford, Tarik Muharemovic and Nico Elvedi. Those additions have helped Farke build a stronger squad, and Leeds have already enjoyed two wins against Nottingham Forest.

However, the Leeds United transfer news is not finished yet.

With the September 1 deadline getting closer, the club are still considering whether another striker should be added to the squad. Harder has now entered the picture, and the reported transfer structure could make the deal particularly interesting.

The 21-year-old Denmark international is believed to be available on an initial loan, with an option to buy next summer.

Harder is not the obvious name most Leeds fans would have expected to see linked with the club at this stage of the window, but the reported interest makes sense when the current squad is considered.

La Gazzetta dello Sport has reported that Leeds are competing with Lazio and Galatasaray for the young forward. Leipzig are apparently willing to discuss a loan arrangement which would give the interested club the chance to buy him at the end of the season.

Leeds are understood to be one of the clubs showing the strongest interest.

The numbers involved could also make this a sensible piece of business. Harder’s reported value is around £14.5m, while the potential loan and purchase package has been placed at approximately £13.7m.

That would give Leeds the chance to assess the striker in the Premier League before committing to a permanent deal.

There is an interesting story behind Harder’s career as well.

The striker moved through Sporting CP before earning a move to Leipzig, despite still being only 21. At one point, his Portuguese contract reportedly contained a £67m release clause, which shows the level of potential that was seen in him.

His current situation is very different, though, and that could allow Leeds to bring in a player who still has considerable room to improve.

Why Farke could want another striker

Leeds do not necessarily need another player to take Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s place.

The former Everton striker is still the clear first-choice option in Farke’s attack, and there is little reason to believe the club are looking for someone to immediately push him out of the starting XI.

The bigger issue is squad depth.

Lukas Nmecha provides another option, but both he and Calvert-Lewin have had fitness problems during their careers. That makes it dangerous for Leeds to go through a long Premier League season without another reliable option.

Joel Piroe’s departure has made that problem more obvious.

Piroe may not have been one of Farke’s main choices last season, but he was still an experienced forward who could be called upon when required. With him now gone, Leeds have space for another striker.

Harder could fill that role without needing to arrive with the pressure of being the club’s main attacking player.

That could actually be ideal for his development.

At 21, the Dane still has plenty of time to adapt to English football. A loan move would allow him to compete for minutes, learn Farke’s system and show whether he can handle the physical demands of the Premier League.

For Leeds, the option to buy would protect if things do not work out.

The loan-to-buy structure could be perfect for Leeds

This is arguably the most attractive part of the potential transfer.

Leeds have already spent heavily this summer, especially with the arrivals of Trafford and their new defenders. The club therefore have to be careful about where they put their remaining transfer funds.

A loan deal for Harder would reduce the immediate financial risk.

If he succeeds, Leeds could then activate the option and secure a young striker who could become an important part of the squad for several years.

If he struggles, the club would not necessarily be locked into another major permanent signing.

That makes the reported £13.7m package look more appealing.

There is also the possibility that Harder could benefit from a fresh start. His career moved quickly after his time at Sporting, but Leipzig has not necessarily been the final step he expected.

A move to Leeds would put him into another demanding environment, but one where he could potentially play a more important role.

Farke has already shown that he is not afraid to give opportunities to players who fit his plans. Harder’s ability to develop alongside the existing Leeds attack could therefore be worth exploring.

The Whites also have to move quickly.

Lazio and Galatasaray are reportedly interested, and there are only days remaining before the transfer window closes. If Leeds genuinely want Harder, they cannot afford to wait until the final hours before making their position clear.

The club have already strengthened several areas this summer, but another forward could make the squad much better equipped for the long Premier League campaign.

Harder is certainly not a guaranteed success, and signing a young striker from abroad always carries some risk.

But with a loan-first structure, a reported total cost below his current valuation and a potential permanent option next summer, this could be exactly the sort of calculated gamble Leeds should be considering before the deadline.
