Graham Smyth Delivers Brutal Leeds United Ratings After Flat West Ham Defeat as One Player Slammed with 4/10 Performance

by Alex Matthews

Leeds United disappointingly ended their Premier League season after suffering a 3-0 defeat against West Ham United at the London Stadium on Sunday.

The Whites had already secured survival before kick-off, meaning there was little pressure on Daniel Farke’s side heading into the final game of the campaign.

Even so, Leeds supporters would have hoped for a stronger performance to close the season after such an impressive run in recent weeks.

Instead, second-half goals from Taty Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson handed West Ham United victory in a strange afternoon where both sides already knew their fate.

Despite the defeat, Leeds still finished the season in a respectable 14th place after successfully surviving their first year back in the Premier League.

Leeds struggle to create after a bright opening

The first half was tense and scrappy, with neither side looking fully comfortable.

Leeds had some decent moments early on and looked dangerous through Lukas Nmecha, who produced a brilliant run to create the visitors’ best opportunity of the match.

The striker drove forward with confidence before setting up Dominic Calvert-Lewin inside the penalty area. However, the Leeds striker could not beat goalkeeper Mads Hermansen from close range.

That missed chance proved costly later in the game.

Leeds worked hard defensively during the opening period, but there was a lack of quality in the final third. Passes often went astray and attacks regularly broke down before creating real danger.

West Ham punish sleepy Leeds’ defending

The game changed completely in the second half.

West Ham started showing more urgency as the home crowd searched for something positive on a difficult day for the club. Leeds, meanwhile, looked tired and lost concentration in key moments.

The breakthrough finally arrived when Castellanos rose highest from a corner to head home after poor defending inside the box.

That goal lifted the home side, and Leeds never truly recovered.

A second goal soon followed after Mateus Fernandes slipped a clever pass through to Jarrod Bowen, who calmly finished beyond Karl Darlow.

Late on, substitute Callum Wilson added a third goal to complete a frustrating afternoon for the Whites.

Jaka Bijol one of Leeds’ brighter performers

Although the team’s performance was disappointing, a few Leeds players still showed positive signs.

Jaka Bijol was arguably Leeds’ strongest defender on the day. The centre-back defended his box well, won important headers, and remained composed during difficult moments.

He was unlucky to receive a yellow card after what looked like a fair challenge.

Captain Ethan Ampadu also battled hard in midfield, even if he did not quite reach his usual high standards.

Nmecha impressed in flashes too, showing good movement and skill while creating Leeds’ best chance of the game.

However, too many Leeds players failed to deliver quality in attacking areas.

Frustrating afternoon for Brenden Aaronson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Brenden Aaronson struggled to make his good movement count and often lacked composure in dangerous positions.

The midfielder worked hard throughout the game but failed to produce the final ball or finishing touch Leeds needed.

Calvert-Lewin also had a difficult afternoon.

While he caused problems physically for West Ham defenders at times, his missed first-half opportunity summed up Leeds’ struggles in front of goal.

The striker never fully looked sharp, and his link-up play was inconsistent across the match.

Daniel Farke can still reflect on a positive season

Even though Leeds finished with a defeat, the bigger picture remains positive for Daniel Farke and his squad.

Many pundits predicted Leeds would struggle badly after promotion, but the Whites comfortably avoided relegation and even enjoyed an excellent unbeaten run towards the end of the season.

Farke’s tactical changes during the campaign helped improve the side massively, especially after switching to a back-three system earlier in the year.

The Leeds manager will now turn his attention towards the summer transfer window, where improvements in defence and midfield are expected.

There is still work to do if Leeds want to push further up the Premier League table next season, but survival was always the main target this year.

Despite the disappointing result at West Ham, Leeds supporters can still look back on the campaign with pride and optimism for what comes next.
