Leeds United Finally Solve Key Problem as Fifth Summer Signing Agrees Three-Year Deal

Leeds United appear to be closing in on another important addition, with Michael Zetterer reportedly set to join Daniel Farke’s squad from Eintracht Frankfurt.

The German goalkeeper has been linked with a move to Elland Road as Leeds look to strengthen their options behind James Trafford. A deal for the 30-year-old would give Farke much-needed experience between the sticks and remove one of the obvious weaknesses in his squad.

Leeds have already completed four senior signings this summer, bringing in Harry Wilson, James Trafford, Tarik Muharemovic and Nico Elvedi.

Zetterer would become the fifth arrival of the summer if the move is completed, and this transfer could be just as important as some of the bigger deals because of the situation surrounding the club’s goalkeeping department.

The Whites have reportedly agreed a fee in the region of £4.2m, with previous reports suggesting there had been some work still to do over personal terms.

Michael Zetterer contract details emerge

German journalist Christopher Michel has provided a major update on the situation, claiming Zetterer has signed for Leeds United.

According to the report, the goalkeeper has agreed a contract running until 2029, with Leeds also holding an option to extend the agreement by another year.

That would potentially keep Zetterer at Elland Road until 2030, giving the club plenty of security in an important position. The reported transfer fee is around the £5m mark, which is broadly in line with the previously reported figure of £4.2m.

The agreement represents a significant relief for Farke because Leeds had been left with a major question mark behind Trafford.

Trafford arrived from Manchester City in a deal worth around £40m, immediately becoming the club’s clear first-choice goalkeeper.

The problem was the lack of a convincing, experienced alternative. That is where Zetterer comes into the picture.

Why Leeds needed another goalkeeper

Leeds’ goalkeeper situation changed considerably this summer.

Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier both left the club after their contracts ended. Darlow subsequently joined Manchester United, while Meslier moved to Arsenal.

Their departures left Trafford as the obvious number one, but the depth behind him was a serious concern. Alex Cairns was effectively the backup option.

The veteran goalkeeper has very limited senior experience for Leeds. His only appearance for the club came during the 2011/12 Championship season, when he played 31 minutes against Blackpool and conceded twice.

That is clearly not enough experience for a club hoping to stay comfortably in the Premier League. Football can change very quickly, especially in goal.

If Trafford picked up an injury, suspension or simply needed a rest, Farke would have had to place a huge amount of responsibility on Cairns.

That would have been a significant risk. Zetterer changes the picture completely.

The German may be arriving as Trafford’s number two, but he brings senior experience and gives Farke a goalkeeper he can trust if his first-choice option is unavailable.

It also means Cairns can move into the third-choice role, which is a much more sensible position for him at this stage. The goalkeeping department would therefore become far stronger once Zetterer officially joins.

For Leeds, this is not a glamorous transfer, but it is the type of signing that can quietly become extremely important during a long Premier League season.

Trafford will remain the main man between the posts, but having a reliable goalkeeper behind him could prove vital.

The reported contract also shows that Leeds are not simply looking for a short-term solution. A deal until 2029, plus a possible extra year, allows Zetterer to become part of the club’s plans for several seasons.

With the transfer seemingly moving towards completion, Farke can finally start to feel more comfortable about one of the weaker areas of his squad.

Leeds have spent heavily on Trafford already, but spending another £4.2m or so on a capable backup could prove to be money well spent. The next step is now the official announcement.
