Leeds United have been working hard to reshape their squad this summer, and another outgoing deal has now brought an interesting financial twist.
Joe Gelhardt has officially left Elland Road for Hull City on a permanent transfer after spending much of the last two seasons with the Tigers on loan.
The move was expected, but the money involved has now become a talking point.
Leeds sources had previously indicated that the forward had been sold for more than £6.5 million, including add-ons. However, figures coming from the Hull side suggest the actual package could be considerably lower.
According to BBC Humberside Sports Editor Mike White, the agreement is closer to £4.5 million with additional payments included.
That is a notable difference, although the final value of the transfer will depend on whether the add-ons are achieved.
There is also another club benefiting from the deal, with Gelhardt’s former side Wigan Athletic reportedly entitled to 20 per cent of the transfer fee through a sell-on clause.
For Leeds, however, the bigger issue is what comes next. With Gelhardt gone and Joel Piroe also expected to leave, Farke’s attacking options are becoming thinner.

Joe Gelhardt finally gets permanent exit
Gelhardt had been one of the players Leeds supporters expected to leave this summer. The forward had fallen the pecking order under Daniel Farke and struggled to establish himself as a regular first-team player.
His loan spell at Hull allowed him to play more regularly, and he spent the majority of the last two seasons with the Championship club. Hull have now decided to make the move permanent.
For Gelhardt, it gives him the chance to settle at a club where he already knows the environment and has been playing regular football.
For Leeds, it represents another step in clearing players from the squad who are unlikely to play a major role under Farke. The financial side of the deal is less straightforward.
The initial figure of more than £6.5m had created expectations that Leeds had secured a strong return for the forward. The latest information from Hull suggests the guaranteed amount could instead be around £4.5m, with add-ons potentially increasing the total.
The sell-on clause involving Wigan also means Leeds will not keep the entire fee. Still, moving Gelhardt on permanently removes another player from the wage bill and gives the club greater room to reshape the squad.

Leeds could now be forced into the striker market
The biggest consequence of Gelhardt’s departure could be what happens next. Joel Piroe is also expected to leave Leeds, with West Ham reportedly agreeing a deal for the striker.
That would mean two forwards leaving the first-team group during the same period.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin remains the leading striker at Elland Road, but Leeds cannot realistically go into a long Premier League campaign with limited competition for that position.
The club is therefore expected to return to the transfer market for another forward. The profile being discussed is particularly interesting.
Leeds are reportedly looking for a younger striker who can compete directly with Calvert-Lewin rather than simply acting as an emergency back-up.
That would give Farke two genuine options and create competition for the starting position. It also fits the wider approach taken by the club this summer.
Leeds have already invested heavily in improving the squad, but they have also been trying to remove players who are no longer part of the manager’s plans.
The departures of Max Wober and Jack Harrison have helped reduce the wage bill, while Leeds have also moved on Pascal Struijk and Isaac Schmidt for fees. Gelhardt is now another name added to that list.

The 49ers have more work to do
The 49ers have made it clear that this summer is not only about bringing new players through the door. There has also been a major effort to clean up the squad.
Leeds had several players who were no longer central to Farke’s plans, and keeping them would have created problems with squad places, wages and opportunities for younger players.
Gelhardt’s permanent departure is therefore useful even if the final transfer fee is lower than the figure initially expected.
The same can be said about Piroe’s expected move. Losing two forwards at once does create a new problem, though. Leeds now need to replace them. The club cannot afford to wait until the final days of the window and hope that a suitable striker suddenly becomes available.
A younger forward who can compete with Calvert-Lewin would give Farke much better depth and could also protect Leeds from becoming too dependent on one player.
The Gelhardt deal may therefore look like a simple outgoing transfer, but it could be the start of another important stage of Leeds’ summer business.
The Whites have been busy clearing the squad, and the next major move could now come at the other end of the pitch.
Gelhardt is gone. Piroe looks set to follow. Now Leeds need to find the next striker.
