Leeds United could not have asked for a better start to their return to the Premier League, beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 at the City Ground after a dramatic late finish.
The Whites had to wait until the 88th minute to find the breakthrough, but Anton Stach produced a superb free-kick to give Daniel Farke’s side all three points.
There were plenty of reasons for Leeds fans to be excited before kick-off, with three of the club’s four new summer signings named in the starting XI. Nico Elvedi was the only new arrival left out, which was understandable given that he had only recently completed his move and had less time to train with his new teammates.
The biggest attention was naturally on James Trafford and Harry Wilson.
Both players arrived with plenty of expectation, but their first competitive appearances for Leeds could hardly have been more different.
Trafford looked calm and confident throughout a busy evening, while Wilson struggled to make the expected impact in attack.

James Trafford makes a huge Leeds United statement
There was always going to be pressure on Trafford after Leeds made him one of their biggest signings of the summer.
The goalkeeper had to deal with a number of dangerous moments at the City Ground, but he never appeared overwhelmed by the occasion. Whenever Forest managed to get into good positions, Trafford was ready.
His saves kept Leeds in the game during difficult periods, while his composure with the ball at his feet was another encouraging part of his performance.
For a goalkeeper making his competitive Leeds debut, this was exactly the type of display Farke would have wanted.
Trafford looked comfortable, reliable and prepared for the demands of Premier League football. His 8/10 rating reflected that performance and made him one of the standout players on the pitch.
There is still a long way to go in the season, but Leeds supporters will already be feeling much more confident about their new No.1.
Harry Wilson suffers frustrating Leeds debut
Wilson’s first outing was a very different story. The Welshman arrived at Elland Road after an impressive campaign and was expected to add creativity and goals to Farke’s attack. However, very little worked for him against Forest.
Wilson struggled to get involved consistently and looked short of his best throughout the match. His biggest mistake came during a promising Leeds attack when he found himself in an offside position.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin was also in a good position to finish the move, but Wilson moved ahead of him and eventually put the ball into the net.
The goal was ruled out because of the offside. It was a frustrating moment and one Wilson will certainly want to forget quickly.
His 4/10 rating reflected what was a disappointing debut, although Leeds should not panic after one game.
Wilson has already demonstrated his Premier League quality during his career, so there is every reason to expect a much stronger performance in the weeks ahead.
Anton Stach becomes Leeds United match-winner
While Trafford kept Leeds in the contest, Stach ultimately provided the moment that decided it.
With the game heading towards a draw, Leeds won a free-kick in a dangerous position late in the second half. Stach stepped up and delivered.
His excellent effort found the back of the net in the 88th minute, sending the travelling Leeds supporters into celebration.
It was a fitting reward for another strong performance from the midfielder. Stach also received an 8/10 rating, matching Trafford as Leeds’ joint-highest-rated players.
The German has already looked impressive during pre-season, and this performance will only strengthen his case to remain one of Farke’s key midfield options.
For a newly promoted side, having players capable of producing moments like this could prove extremely important throughout the campaign.

Leeds United have plenty to build on
The most important thing for Farke is that Leeds left Nottingham with three points.
This was not a perfect performance, and there were periods when Forest created problems for the visitors. However, Leeds showed enough defensive resilience to survive those moments before producing the quality required to win the game.
Trafford’s performance will be particularly pleasing.
The goalkeeper looked like someone who was comfortable playing at this level, despite the pressure surrounding his arrival.
Stach also continued his excellent form and showed that he can be a match-winner. There are concerns, too.
Aaronson struggled, Wilson had a poor debut and Calvert-Lewin could not make a major attacking impact. Those are areas Farke will want to improve before the next fixture.
But that is exactly why the opening-day victory is so valuable. Leeds do not need to be perfect immediately. They need to collect points while the new-look squad continues to develop an understanding.
The arrival of Elvedi should also give Farke another defensive option, while Leeds’ remaining transfer business could further strengthen the squad before the window closes.
For now, though, the headline belongs to Trafford and Stach.
One new signing kept Leeds in the game, another produced the winning moment, and Farke’s side began their Premier League campaign with a hugely valuable 1-0 victory.
