Civil War Breaks Out Over £42M Leeds Target as Shareholder Pushes for Surprise Sale

Leeds United may have been handed an unexpected opportunity in their long-running pursuit of Igor Paixao, with fresh claims suggesting there is disagreement inside Marseille over the winger’s future.

The latest claims from French reporter Mohamed Toubache-Ter suggest Marseille manager Bruno Genesio has no desire to lose Paixao. That position is understandable.

The 26-year-old enjoyed an impressive first season in France, scoring 12 goals and providing six assists across 42 appearances.

He has also shown a strong scoring record over a longer period, reaching double figures in five of his last six full seasons.

A player with that type of output would normally be someone a manager wants to keep, particularly when he still has several years remaining on his contract. But there appears to be another opinion inside Marseille.

Toubache-Ter claims that a major shareholder, believed to be Frank McCourt, is keen on selling Paixao. McCourt owns around 95 per cent of Marseille, meaning his position carries considerable weight.

The most surprising part of the report is the suggestion that there are concerns Paixao could be sold for less than his true value. That would be particularly frustrating for Marseille supporters.

The club paid a significant amount to bring the winger from Feyenoord, gave him a five-year contract and then watched him establish himself as an important attacking player.

If he were suddenly sold for a bargain price, questions would naturally be asked about the decision-making behind the move. For Leeds, though, that potential disagreement could be very useful.

Leeds could take advantage of the situation

This is where the story becomes particularly interesting for Leeds. If Marseille were completely united about keeping Paixao, the Whites would probably have to pay a huge fee to convince them to sell.

Reports have suggested a price of up to £42.7m, which would represent another major investment for Leeds.

But if there really is disagreement between the manager and ownership, the situation could become more complicated. A club normally wants to control the timing and price of a major sale. The closer the transfer deadline gets, however, the pressure can increase.

Marseille may have to decide whether keeping an unhappy player is preferable to accepting a substantial offer. Leeds should therefore be ready.

There is no guarantee that Paixao will become available for a bargain price, and his contract until 2030 gives Marseille strong protection.

In fact, the long-term deal means the French club have little reason to panic unless they genuinely want to sell. But the reported internal disagreement changes the picture.

The current season also gives Leeds another reason to be interested. Paixao has already made five starts and five appearances, playing 503 minutes and scoring four goals while providing one assist.

Those numbers suggest he has started the new campaign in strong form. That makes a potential transfer even more attractive for Farke.

Leeds have already added attacking quality this summer, but there is still a feeling that Farke’s side could use another player capable of producing something unexpected. Paixao could provide that.

Leeds would still have to decide whether his potential fee represents good value. Paying £42.7m would be a major commitment, particularly when there are other areas of Farke’s squad that still need attention.

But if Marseille’s reported internal disagreement creates a genuine chance to negotiate a lower figure, Leeds should at least explore it.

The forensic figures listed for Paixao point towards a current value of £30.2m, with a forced-sale figure of £24.2m and a premium value of £37.8m. Those numbers do not determine the actual transfer price, but they show why a deal significantly below £42.7m could be viewed as attractive.

For Marseille, selling a player with a contract until 2030 for too little could create anger among supporters. For Leeds, however, that is exactly the type of opportunity the club should be watching.
