How the training ground came about

Howard Wilkinson wanted a proper purpose-built base when he became manager in 1988. Until then the players trained on Fullerton Park, behind the West Stand at Elland Road. The club settled on Thorp Arch in the early 1990s and built pitches and a building called The Grange for changing rooms, offices and academy lodging.
A bigger academy building, The Barn, opened in 2002. It has an indoor pitch, a gym, physio and rehab rooms and a hydrotherapy pool.

What is at the training ground now

The site covers about 12 hectares. The Barn holds the main reception, a cafe, offices, changing rooms and the indoor pitch, which the academy uses most. Several of the outdoor pitches have floodlights. The under-18s and under-16s play their home games there.

Plans for the training ground

In June 2026 the club put in a planning application for Thorp Arch. Reports in July 2026 describe four parts: a new groundskeeper facility, reworking The Barn into facilities for academy students and parents, more parking and related changes. A fit-out of new canteen and boot room space was finished in 2026. Place Yorkshire reported on 16 September 2026 that the club was still awaiting planning permission. That report is dated; check the council planning record for any later decision.
