Scott Gardner: bravery needed at Tamworth

by Alex Matthews

Scott Gardner wants more attacking bravery from Leeds United Under-21s after their 1-0 National League Cup defeat at Tamworth. Speaking to Leeds’ official website on 6 October, the coach said his side had not created enough chances despite improving after the break.

Scott Gardner calls for more bravery

Gardner’s assessment focused on Leeds’ use of the ball rather than their willingness to compete physically. He said the players dealt well with that side of a match against opponents with a different style, but wanted them to do more in possession.

He described the first-half performance as lacking bravery and said the improvement in the second period had not produced enough chances for the quality available. Those are the coach’s post-match comments, not a separate judgement about individual academy players.

Tamworth hold Leeds to a narrow defeat

The club’s match report records Oliver Dyson’s 43rd-minute goal as the difference at The Lamb Ground. Leeds pushed for an equaliser but finished without a goal in the penultimate Group C fixture.

Scott Gardner said it was unusual for his side not to score and expressed disappointment that they had not put Tamworth under enough pressure. His comments address this performance; they do not announce a disciplinary decision, an injury or a first-team selection change.

Scott Gardner looks to the next match

Meanwhile, Scott Gardner referred to the quick turnaround before a Friday meeting with Stockport County Under-21s. His message was that Leeds wanted to entertain more than they had at Tamworth. The source does not give a kick-off time here, so supporters should check the club’s current fixture information before making plans.
