Leeds 1-1 Man Utd: Calvert-Lewin earns Whites a point at Elland Road

by Alex Matthews

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s equaliser earned Leeds United a point at Elland Road on Sunday, as the Leeds Man Utd draw was settled after Bryan Mbeumo put the visitors ahead in the first half. Leeds were not at their best, but they matched a United side under pressure and pushed hard for a winner after the break.

Leeds Man Utd draw: how Mbeumo gave United the lead

The opening phase was scrappy and physical. Calvert-Lewin nearly robbed Senne Lammens early on and picked Lisandro Martinez’s pocket inside five minutes, while Nico Elvedi’s header from an Anton Stach free-kick forced Lammens into a save around the 26th minute. James Trafford also raced well out of his area to cut out a one-two between Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes.

United took the lead in the 36th minute, according to the Yorkshire Post. Youri Tielemans sent a low cross over and Mbeumo ran in behind James Justin to tap home. Mbeumo had already missed a close-range header from a Tielemans delivery, so Leeds were aware of the danger down their left side.

Calvert-Lewin levels from a corner

In the second half of the Leeds Man Utd draw, Michael Carrick changed shape at half-time and brought on Noussair Mazraoui for Martinez, but it was Mazraoui who conceded the corner that brought the equaliser six minutes into the second half. Noah Okafor skipped past Andrey Santos and switched play to Jayden Bogle, whose cross was headed behind. From the corner Tarik Muharemovic flicked the ball on, and Calvert-Lewin outmuscled Mbeumo before finishing.

That goal followed a quiet start for the striker. He had put one first-half header wide and sent another straight at Lammens, yet BBC Sport’s player ratings still gave him an 8, the highest mark of either side.
That substitution shaped the rest of the Leeds Man Utd draw.

Leeds push on without finding a winner

Elland Road lifted after the equaliser, and the Leeds Man Utd draw was open from there. Ao Tanaka sent a volley over the bar, Okafor ballooned a shot after Calvert-Lewin won a corner, and Stach could not keep a volley down. Okafor made way for Lukas Nmecha after 72 minutes and Sean Longstaff replaced Tanaka on 79, but no winner came. Mazraoui also made an important block in injury time to keep the score level.

Daniel Farke, whose contract situation has been in the news this month, named an unchanged side for a fifth consecutive game, and Bruno Fernandes and Gabriel Gudmundsson were both booked in a contest full of tackles. The Yorkshire Post judged the draw a fair result on an afternoon when neither team was quite good enough to claim more.
Neither side found a winner, which kept the Leeds Man Utd draw level to the end.

What the Leeds Man Utd draw means

The Whites go away with a point from a game against a club with far greater resources, while United remain on one league win this season, which came at the end of August against Ipswich. Calvert-Lewin’s finish gives Farke’s side another result to build on, though a second straight win over United stayed out of reach.
