Leeds v Man Utd: ultimate preview, team news and stats

by Alex Matthews

Leeds v Man Utd returns to Elland Road on Sunday afternoon, and it remains one of the standout fixtures of the season. Daniel Farke’s side will look to build on last season’s memorable success in this fixture. April’s 2-1 triumph at Old Trafford, sealed by Noah Okafor’s double, delivered a first league victory at United’s home in 45 years. Sunday offers the chance to make it back-to-back wins over the old enemy.

Leeds v Man Utd: the form guide

Leeds head into the weekend seventh in the Premier League table. Nine points from the opening five outings laid strong foundations before the international break. That run included a 4-1 win over Newcastle United and a goalless draw with Crystal Palace. Even last weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Arsenal came with real encouragement. James Justin’s powerful strike put the Whites ahead at the Emirates. The champions then turned the game around with a quickfire double.

As the club’s official preview notes, Leeds still boast the joint-best defensive record in the top flight. They have conceded only five goals in six matches. James Trafford has kept two clean sheets and made a league-leading 24 saves so far.

Manchester United arrive at Leeds v Man Utd in very different form. Manchester United, three points behind Leeds in 13th, are without a win in four league games. Their only victory all season was the 5-2 success over newly promoted Ipswich Town. Their midweek Champions League trip to Atletico de Madrid also ended in defeat. They conceded inside the first minute, and Ademola Lookman’s second-half strike settled it for Diego Simeone’s side.

Team news and match details

Ahead of Leeds v Man Utd, Daniel Farke hopes to have Daniel James available for selection against his former club. The winger picked up a small injury on international duty. Joe Rodon remains sidelined, but he is expected to return to action in the coming weeks. Farke’s own situation has also made headlines, with Farke’s reported new contract in principle emerging this week.

The match is dedicated to the No Room For Racism campaign. Captain Ethan Ampadu is among the players from all 20 clubs featuring in a new film celebrating football’s diversity. Leeds v Man Utd kicks off at 2pm on Sunday.
