Leeds United May Have Found a £8.5M Gem as Farke Uncovers His Stach-Calvert-Lewin Hybrid

Leeds United have made an unbeaten start to the 2026/27 campaign, and one of their summer signings is quickly showing why Daniel Farke was so keen to bring him to Elland Road.

Nico Elvedi has quietly become one of the most impressive additions to the Leeds squad after arriving from Borussia Monchengladbach for around £8.5m. While the attention around the club has mainly focused on the big-money arrivals and the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Elvedi could prove to be one of the smartest pieces of business made by Farke and the recruitment team.

Leeds have taken four points from their opening three Premier League matches after beating Nottingham Forest before drawing with Brentford and Brighton. They also defeated Forest in the League Cup, meaning the Whites are yet to lose a competitive game this season.

That is a positive sign for Farke, especially after Leeds finished 14th during their first campaign back in the Premier League. The club have clearly learned from last season and have continued to add players with the physical qualities needed to compete in English football.

Elvedi is now looking like another example of that recruitment plan working perfectly.

Daniel Farke has found another physically strong addition

When looking at the way Leeds have built their squad, physical strength has clearly been an important part of the plan.

Last summer, the club brought in several tall and powerful players, including Anton Stach, Sebastiaan Bornauw, Jaka Bijol and Calvert-Lewin. The idea was simple. Leeds needed players who could handle the speed, strength and physical demands of the Premier League.

That strategy has continued this summer, even though the club has also looked to improve their technical quality.

Elvedi fits the plan extremely well.

The Swiss defender stands at 6ft 2in and already looks comfortable dealing with the physical side of Premier League football. He won six of ten duels on his Leeds debut against Nottingham Forest and has continued to improve with every appearance.

His relationship with Farke is another major advantage.

The defender worked under Farke at Borussia Monchengladbach, where he was the most-used player during the German coach’s spell in charge, making 34 appearances. That existing understanding means Elvedi did not need a long period to learn what his manager expects.

He has played 236 minutes across his last three appearances in all competitions, and his performance against Brighton was particularly impressive.

Against Brighton, Elvedi produced ten defensive contributions and made two important blocks to help protect James Trafford’s goal.

His seven clearances also showed that he is not afraid to do the basic defensive work when his team are under pressure. That is exactly what Leeds need from their central defenders in difficult away matches.

Elvedi can offer Leeds what Stach and Calvert-Lewin brought

The interesting part of Elvedi’s start at Leeds is that his influence is not limited to defending.

He has already shown that he can be a threat at the other end of the pitch, particularly when Leeds have set pieces.

Against Brighton, the defender created two big chances with his headed deliveries inside the box. That gives Farke another player who can attack crosses and cause problems for opposition defenders.

This is where the comparison with Calvert-Lewin becomes interesting.

Calvert-Lewin was one of Leeds’ most important players last season because of his physical presence. The striker scored 14 goals, including three headers, and averaged 3.7 aerial battles won per match.

Elvedi obviously cannot replace a striker’s goals, but he can provide some of the same aerial threat when Leeds get the ball into the opposition penalty area.

The defender has already created three chances and two big chances in his first three appearances for the club. Last season in the Bundesliga, he created three big chances and provided two assists.

That is a very useful bonus from a centre-back.

The numbers show just how much Leeds have prioritised physical qualities in their recruitment.

Gabriel Gudmundsson was the only 2025 summer signing below six feet, while six of the arrivals were above 6ft 1in. That approach helped Leeds cope with the demands of the Premier League and could again prove useful this season.

For Leeds United Daniel Farke, Elvedi is therefore more than simply another centre-back. He gives the manager strength, experience, aerial ability and a threat from dead-ball situations.

The club’s set-piece record also makes this even more interesting. Leeds scored 16 goals from set pieces last season, ranking sixth in the Premier League. With Elvedi now attacking corners and free-kicks, there is a chance that number could improve.

The defender’s arrival may have received less attention because of the £34m spent on Tarik Muharemovic and the £40m deal for James Trafford, but the early signs suggest Leeds have found excellent value in Elvedi.

That will also be important when looking at future Leeds transfer rumours and the next Premier League transfer windows. Leeds do not need to spend huge amounts on every position if they can continue finding experienced players who fit Farke’s system.

For now, Elvedi looks like exactly that kind of signing.

He has adapted quickly, understands what Farke wants and has already shown that he can handle the physical demands of English football. His defensive numbers against Brighton were strong, while his attacking contribution from set pieces gives Leeds another weapon.

The Leeds United signing of Elvedi for around £8.5m could therefore turn out to be one of the smartest moves of the summer.

With more Premier League matches, League Cup games and potentially bigger targets ahead, including the dream of reaching a League Cup final or competing for a European place, Leeds will need players who can perform consistently.

Elvedi is already giving Farke plenty of reasons to trust him.

And while supporters will continue to discuss Calvert-Lewin, Stach and the club’s other major names, the Swiss defender may quietly become one of the most important players in this Leeds side.
