Nico Elvedi now has a huge opportunity

The timing of Rodon’s injury is certainly unfortunate for Leeds, but it gives Elvedi an important chance to show why the club decided to spend £8.5m on him.

The 29-year-old has already had some minutes since arriving at Elland Road. He made his Leeds debut against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup and then came off the bench to replace the injured Rodon against Brentford.

Those appearances have given him a taste of English football, but he could now be asked to take things to another level.

Everything points towards Elvedi being given his first Premier League start for Leeds when they travel to Brighton on Saturday.

It is not an easy assignment for a defender making his first league start, especially when he is coming into the team because another important player is injured. But Elvedi has already shown enough in his early appearances to suggest that Leeds supporters do not need to panic.

His performance against Forest in the cup was encouraging, while he also looked comfortable after coming on against Brentford.
