Arsenal 2-1 Leeds: chances before the break

Daniel Farke named an unchanged side from the goalless draw with Crystal Palace before the international break. Leeds reached half-time level after creating several opportunities to take the lead.

According to the club’s official match report, David Raya denied Dominic Calvert-Lewin from close range, gathered an Ethan Ampadu header and parried a Gabriel Gudmundsson drive.

Anton Stach also had an effort on target hit team-mate Jayden Bogle and spin away. At the other end, James Trafford dealt with a Kai Havertz header as the opening half finished 0-0.

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds: Justin gives Leeds the lead

Leeds continued to threaten after the interval. Raya tipped an Ao Tanaka drive over before Gudmundsson created the breakthrough down the left.

The full-back sent the ball across goal and Justin arrived at the back post to finish. Gabriel could not keep the effort out on the line, giving Leeds a 1-0 lead.

A subsequent Bogle cross was just beyond Calvert-Lewin and Noah Okafor. Leeds could not turn that opening into a second goal.

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds: Calafiori and Guimaraes turn it around

Calafiori bundled in from close range to equalise in the 62nd minute. Guimaraes, introduced from the bench, then put Arsenal ahead with a finish into the bottom corner.

Farke brought on Harry Wilson and Brenden Aaronson for Tanaka and Okafor, followed by Lukas Nmecha as Leeds searched for a reply. Jaka Bijol and Jean-Matteo Bahoya also entered the game late on.

Calvert-Lewin sent a low cross towards Nmecha, but neither he nor Aaronson could turn it into a shooting chance. Leeds pressed in added time without finding an equaliser, and Bukayo Saka shot wide on the final break.

A closer contest, but no point

Before the match, Farke had described the visit as a chance to measure Leeds’ progress following last season’s heavy defeats against Arsenal. This was a much closer scoreline, although Leeds left without a point.

Read our report on Farke’s pre-match progress test for that context.

The defeat ends Leeds’ unbeaten opening five-match league run.
