Leeds United came back to the Premier League in the best way possible, with a huge 1-0 win over Everton at Elland Road.
The Whites shocked many fans and pundits, but truth be told, they fully deserved the three points on Monday night.
It was Lukas Nmecha who kept his cool from the penalty spot after James Tarkowski’s foul inside the box.
The finish sent the Leeds fans wild, and it was a special night in Yorkshire as Daniel Farke’s men made history.
First Team In 17 Years To Do It
This victory is more than just three points. Leeds are now the first Championship winners in 17 years to win their opening game back in the Premier League.
The last team to do this was Sunderland in the 2007/08 season when they beat Tottenham 1-0.
Since then, many promoted sides have struggled in their first game, but Leeds broke that long record with a confident display.
Leicester drew on their Premier League return, while Burnley got thrashed by Manchester City last season.
Leeds, however, showed courage, belief, and real strength to stand tall against Everton.
The win also puts Leeds in a positive spot early in the season. They now sit seventh in the table, and while it is far too early to dream big, this record-breaking start gives fans a reason to smile.
Standout Performances
Midfielder Ao Tanaka was the real standout on the night, running the show in the middle of the pitch.
He kept the ball moving, broke down Everton attacks, and gave Leeds control from start to finish.
The whole team looked sharp and hungry. Farke’s tactics worked perfectly, with solid defending and quick counters that caused the Toffees problems throughout the game.
What Comes Next
Attention now turns to Leeds’ next challenge, a tough away trip to Arsenal on 23 August.
New signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who joined from Everton, is expected to make his debut against his former rivals.
Fans are already excited to see him in action in a Leeds shirt.
Arsenal are strong from set pieces, scoring 13 goals from them last season.
Leeds must be careful at the back and stay organised, but with their pace and power, they can hurt the Gunners on the counter.
This record-breaking start will give Leeds belief.
If they can follow up with another big result in London, it will prove that the Whites are not just here to survive, they are here to compete.
