49ers to Rake in Millions? Ex-Leeds Ace Sparks Transfer Frenzy: Fabrizio Romano Speaks Out

by Alex Matthews

Leeds United may not be signing players at the moment, but they could still be in for a surprise cash boost thanks to a former academy player.

While the 49ers are busy fixing parts of the team, like looking for a new goalkeeper and striker, one of their old stars is making headlines in Europe and it might just pay off for Leeds.

Former Leeds Lad Shining in France

Charlie Cresswell, who came through the Leeds academy, is now smashing it in Ligue 1 with Toulouse.

He left Elland Road for just £3.8 million not too long ago, and fans were gutted to see him go.

young centre-back was tipped for big things, and now he’s proving it.

The 22-year-old defender had a strong season in France, even helping England U21s win the Euros in Slovenia under boss Lee Carsley.

His performances have caught the eyes of some big clubs across Europe.

Fabrizio Romano Confirms Clubs Are Moving In

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that Premier League and Serie A clubs are starting talks to try and sign Cresswell.

He’s said to be free to leave Toulouse, and West Ham are already one of the sides keen on landing him. Sunderland are also reportedly watching the situation closely.

Toulouse wanted around £18 million for the young defender, and with so many clubs interested, the price might even go up higher.

Leeds to Get £2.7 Million If Deal Happens

Even though Cresswell is no longer at Leeds, the Whites are still in line to benefit.

That’s because Leeds added a 15% sell-on clause when they sold him. So, if he’s sold for £18 million, Leeds would pocket £2.7 million from the deal.

That kind of money could be a big help as the 49ers look to strengthen the squad this summer.

While it doesn’t make up for losing Cresswell in the first place, the cash could go towards a new striker or goalkeeper both areas Leeds need to fix before the season starts.

Fans Still Frustrated Over His Sale

Many fans still believe selling Cresswell was a bad move. At 6’3”, he’s a powerful defender with great stats from last season:

  • 31 games played

  • 3 goals

  • 65.7% tackles won

  • 3.44 aerial duels won per 90

  • 151 duels won

These numbers show why clubs are queuing up to sign him. Leeds may regret letting him go, but at least they’ll gain something from his next move.
