Leeds United may have lost a bit of steam after their defeat to Tottenham, but the bigger picture still gives fans a reason to stay calm.
Daniel Farke’s men sit on eight points from their first seven Premier League games, which puts them ahead of most teams that ended up getting relegated in past seasons.
The early part of the season has been a bit up and down. Two wins, two draws, and three defeats don’t sound perfect, but it’s far from a disaster either.
Leeds have looked lively in many games, creating good chances, though finishing has been a big problem, especially for striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who had another off day in front of goal against Spurs.
Leeds Ahead of Past Relegated Teams
When comparing their points to teams that went down in the last 15 Premier League seasons, Leeds are doing better than most of them at this stage.
Only one or two teams in that time had more points after seven matches, which shows that Farke’s side have made a solid start.
Even Leicester City, who went down last season, only managed six points after seven games.
Others, like Luton, Burnley, and Ipswich, barely got four points in their first seven games before ending up near the bottom by May.

Here’s how Leeds’ current total compares to the last 15 relegated teams:
Season | Relegated Team | Points After 7 Games | Points After 38 Games |
22/23 | Leeds | 11 | 31 |
21/22 | Watford | 7 | 23 |
22/23 | Southampton | 7 | 25 |
24/25 | Leicester | 6 | 25 |
20/21 | Fulham | 4 | 28 |
23/24 | Luton | 4 | 26 |
23/24 | Burnley | 4 | 24 |
24/25 | Ipswich | 4 | 22 |
20/21 | WBA | 3 | 26 |
21/22 | Burnley | 3 | 35 |
20/21 | Sheff Utd | 1 | 23 |
21/22 | Norwich | 1 | 22 |
22/23 | Leicester | 1 | 34 |
23/24 | Sheff Utd | 1 | 16 |
24/25 | Southampton | 1 | 12 |
This table shows that Leeds are doing better than most of those sides, who were struggling badly by this point of their seasons.
Lessons From the Past and What’s Next
However, Leeds fans will remember one worrying example from their own history.
Back in the 2022/23 season, Leeds picked up 11 points from their first seven matches, yet they still got relegated by the end of the season with only 31 points. That shows how quickly things can turn if form drops.
Speaking after the Tottenham match, former Leeds goalkeeper Nigel Martyn told LUTV that the team needs to keep improving:
“The performances are good, but they’ve got to start putting chances away. You can’t keep missing them, or the season will get long.”
With Burnley and West Ham coming up after the international break, these next two games could define the next phase of the season.
If Leeds can sharpen up in front of goal and turn their good play into wins, Daniel Farke’s men might just avoid the struggles that doomed those past teams.
