Leeds United Open Talks for Prolific £40M Striker as Dominic Calvert-Lewin Faces Major Competition

by Alex Matthews

Leeds United may have enjoyed a successful first season back in the Premier League, but Daniel Farke is not ready to stop improving his squad.

The Whites are expected to stay busy during the summer transfer window as they look to add more quality in several positions. One area that could still change is the attack, despite Dominic Calvert-Lewin enjoying an excellent campaign at Elland Road.

The England striker finished as Leeds’ top scorer last season and played a huge part in helping the club secure Premier League survival. However, new reports suggest Leeds are now exploring a move for Juventus forward Lois Openda.

The Belgian striker is attracting interest from Elland Road, and his arrival could create strong competition for a place in Farke’s starting line-up.

Leeds make Lois Openda one of their attacking targets

Leeds are believed to have made contact to learn more about the possibility of signing Openda this summer.

The striker spent last season with Juventus, but his time in Italy did not go as planned. Limited opportunities made it difficult for him to show his best form, leaving questions over his long-term future.

Despite that, Leeds remain interested because they know what Openda has achieved in previous seasons.

Before moving to Italy, the Belgian built a strong reputation as a goalscorer in Europe. He regularly found the net and showed he could perform at a high level in different leagues.

That record is one of the main reasons why Leeds believe he could become an important addition to the squad.

Reports suggest Juventus could even be open to letting the striker leave on loan, which may make a deal easier for Leeds to complete.

Calvert-Lewin still important to Leeds

There is no doubt that Dominic Calvert-Lewin remains one of the key players at Elland Road.

After arriving on a free transfer, many people questioned whether he could return to his best form following difficult years with Everton.

The experienced striker answered those doubts impressively.

His goals helped Leeds collect valuable points throughout the season, and he finished as the club’s leading scorer. His movement, strength and ability inside the penalty area gave Leeds a reliable attacking threat.

Farke has shown plenty of trust in the England international, and there is no suggestion that the manager wants to replace him.

Instead, the Leeds boss wants stronger competition across the squad.

Healthy competition could benefit Leeds

One problem for Leeds last season was the lack of proven options behind Calvert-Lewin.

When the striker needed a rest or was unavailable, Farke did not have another forward with the same level of experience and goalscoring record.

Signing Openda would change that.

Both players have different qualities, giving Leeds more flexibility depending on the opponent and the style of game.

Competition for places often helps players improve, and having two strong centre-forwards could make Leeds much more dangerous over a long Premier League season.

The club knows they cannot rely on one player to score all the goals if they want to continue moving up the table.

Farke continues ambitious summer rebuild

Leeds have already been linked with several new signings as they prepare for another demanding Premier League campaign.

Strengthening the attack remains one of the club’s priorities, and Openda appears to fit the profile Leeds are looking for.

At 26, he still has plenty of years ahead of him and already has experience playing in some of Europe’s biggest leagues.

Although his most recent season was disappointing, Leeds believe his previous goalscoring record shows what he is capable of when given regular football.

Whether a deal can be agreed remains to be seen, but the interest shows that Farke is determined to build a squad with greater depth and quality.

If Openda does arrive at Elland Road, Calvert-Lewin is unlikely to lose his importance straight away. Instead, Leeds would have two talented strikers competing every week, giving the manager more options and making the team stronger.

With the transfer window still open, Leeds supporters can expect more movement in the weeks ahead as the club continues shaping a squad capable of competing comfortably in the Premier League.
