Leeds United Defender’s Future Sparks Speculation Amid Red Bull Salzburg Transfer Buzz

by Alex Matthews

Leeds United defender Max Wöber is reportedly in talks for a January move back to his former club, Red Bull Salzburg.

The Austrian center-back, who joined Leeds in January 2023, has had a challenging time at Elland Road, and a return to Salzburg seems increasingly likely.

Red Bull Salzburg, struggling in mid-table in the Austrian Bundesliga, are eager to strengthen their squad.

The club has been a dominant force in Austrian football, winning four of the last five league titles, but they’re currently far from their usual standards.

Wöber, a reliable defender with leadership qualities, is seen as an ideal candidate to help turn their fortunes around.

Reports suggest that negotiations between Salzburg and Leeds are progressing well, with the transfer fee unlikely to be a sticking point.

Wöber’s Time at Leeds

Wöber arrived at Leeds for around £10 million but found his opportunities limited this season under manager Daniel Farke.

Knee surgery earlier in the campaign kept him out of action for months, but he has returned to fitness recently, featuring in games against Swansea City and Luton Town in November.

Despite limited appearances, Wöber has shown glimpses of his quality, impressing fans with solid performances.

However, competition for places and tactical preferences have restricted his role in the squad.

With Leeds managing to reduce wages after relegation, Wöber is reportedly earning between £14,000 and £17,500 per week, significantly lower than his original £35,000 salary.

Red Bull Salzburg’s Sporting Director Speaks

Salzburg’s new sporting director, Rouven Schröder, hinted at the club’s transfer plans, emphasizing the importance of experienced players in their young squad.

While he didn’t confirm discussions about Wöber, his comments suggest a willingness to explore such moves.

Schröder stated:

“Maybe you can trigger something with a player’s departure and change the structure of the team. The same applies to new arrivals.”

Farke’s Stance on Wöber

Leeds manager Daniel Farke previously praised Wöber’s commitment, describing him as eager to prove his worth.

However, with limited chances in the current system, a move could benefit all parties involved.
