Phillips Bombshell: Man City Ready to Axe Midfielder with Leeds Waiting in the Wings

by Alex Matthews

Leeds United had a very tough end to the summer transfer window.

Fans waited all day on deadline day hoping to see new attackers come through the door at Elland Road.

But when the 7pm deadline came, nothing happened. No fresh faces. No new strikers.

Manager Daniel Farke made it clear he wanted more attacking players.

He said his team needed goals to survive in the Premier League.

But now, the German boss must work with what he’s got until January.

Leeds signed 10 new players in the summer, and many of them look strong in defence and midfield.

But with just one goal in the first three Premier League games, the big problem is obvious scoring.

Now, all eyes turn to January.

Kalvin Phillips Back On Leeds Radar

One name keeps coming up again and again, Kalvin Phillips.

The 29-year-old midfielder is still at Manchester City, but his future looks very uncertain.

Phillips had loan spells at West Ham and Ipswich last season, but neither worked well for him.

In May, he had Achilles surgery, which stopped any chance of leaving City this summer.

He missed pre-season and is still working his way back to fitness.

Reports now say City will keep him until January. But after that, they are ready to move him on.

It could be a loan, it could even be permanent. And Leeds are watching very closely.

Leeds Already Made Checks

Transfer expert Graeme Bailey revealed that Leeds were keeping tabs on Phillips before deadline day.

He even said City thought about paying off the rest of Phillips’ contract, which would open the door for a free move.

Bailey explained that Leeds “are keeping very close checks” on their former star, and there is a “good chance he ends up back at Elland Road.”

The big issue is wages. Phillips earns huge money at Man City, more than £100k a week.

Leeds cannot afford that. If he comes back, it would need to be on much smaller wages or with the City helping to cover the cost.

Why Phillips Return Could Happen

Leeds fans are split on the idea of bringing him back.

Some say he is a club legend and would add quality and experience.

Others think his injuries and high wages make it too risky.

But with players like Ethan Ampadu out injured, and if more midfielders pick up knocks, Farke might need a player like Phillips in January.

His numbers show his history at Leeds, 234 games, 14 goals, 13 assists and fans remember him as the heart of midfield when the club got back to the Premier League.

January Now Feels Massive

The summer ended with disappointment, but Leeds cannot look back for long.

Farke knows the season will be a fight, and without more goals or strong midfield options, it will be very hard.

January now feels like a lifeline.

Whether Phillips is the answer or not, Leeds must find a way to add quality in attack and midfield. Otherwise, the brave fight back in the top flight could fall short.
