£242m UEFA Bombshell Forces Newcastle to Sell: Leeds Ready to Pounce on Longstaff Deal

by Alex Matthews

Leeds United are back in for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff, and this time, the deal could make big sense for both sides.

Longstaff Close to Exit

Sean Longstaff, 27, might be on his way out of St James’ Park. Leeds United have made three bids for him already, the latest being around £12 million including add-ons.

But Newcastle said no again, asking for a bigger fee. Reports say they want at least £15 million.

Longstaff has had a tough time lately. He lost his starting spot after Sandro Tonali returned from suspension.

Now, with his contract running out next year, Newcastle might want to cash in before it’s too late.

Because he came through their academy, any money made from the sale is counted as full profit.

FFP Problems for Newcastle

UEFA rules say clubs can’t spend more than 70% of their yearly money on wages, transfers and agent fees.

Newcastle made about £320 million last year, so their limit is around £242 million. But their wages and player costs could push them over that limit.

Getting Longstaff’s wages off the books helps, and selling him for £15 million gives pure profit.

That helps a lot with Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. This is why the Magpies have already sold players like Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh.

Leeds Need Midfield Depth

Leeds United are building for life in the Premier League again. Daniel Farke wants strong and experienced players in midfield.

Longstaff, with his Premier League experience, is a top target.

So far, Leeds have already made a few signings, but they still need players in key areas like midfield, striker, and goalkeeper.

Getting someone like Longstaff could be a big win.

What Happens Next?

It looks like Newcastle may have no choice but to let Longstaff go soon. With clubs like Leeds ready and willing to meet the price, a deal might happen fast.

Leeds will hope their fourth offer does the trick. And for Newcastle, it could be a much-needed boost to their finances.
