Why Joel Piroe May Not Be the Answer for Leeds United in the Premier League

by Mitch Emmerson

Promotion back to the Premier League is a huge achievement for Leeds United, but staying there is the real challenge. With that in mind, tough decisions will need to be made—none more pressing than the future of Joel Piroe. Despite a decent goal return in the Championship, there are valid concerns about whether Piroe can lead the line for Leeds in the top flight.

A Proven Championship Scorer—but Limited Beyond That

Piroe’s track record in the Championship speaks for itself. Across spells with Swansea and now Leeds, he’s consistently found the net, boasting good instincts in and around the box. But when you zoom out and analyse his overall contribution to team play, questions begin to arise.

He is a penalty-box finisher, not a mobile forward or a pressing machine. In the Premier League, where defenders are faster, stronger, and more tactically disciplined, strikers need to do more than just poach goals—they need to link up play, press effectively, and stretch back lines. That’s not Piroe’s game.

🏃‍♂️ Lack of Mobility and Pressing Intensity

Modern Premier League systems demand forwards who are mobile, intense pressers, and tactically versatile. Piroe often lacks urgency without the ball and doesn’t press with the intensity needed to lead the line in a high-tempo system like Daniel Farke’s—or any system that wants to stay competitive against elite opposition.

This was evident even in the Championship, where Leeds’ press occasionally faltered when Piroe was played centrally. His preference to drift into deeper or wider areas also disrupted the attacking shape and created disconnects between midfield and attack.

🔁 Tactical Mismatch with Farke’s Vision

Daniel Farke typically prefers strikers who are either:

  • Technically clean and able to drop into pockets (like Teemu Pukki was at Norwich), or

  • Physically dominant and capable of pinning defenders to link play.

Piroe is neither a strong target man nor a creative deep-lying forward. He can finish chances, yes, but he’s often invisible for large stretches of games. That lack of influence is a major liability in the Premier League, where space and time are limited.

⚠️ Doesn’t Contribute Enough Off the Ball

Premier League sides often survive or fall based on how much they can defend from the front. Piroe, unfortunately, does not offer enough off the ball to contribute meaningfully in this regard. While others like Rutter or Gnonto (previously) have offered pressing and transitional threat, Piroe often appears passive—something that can be punished at the top level.

🔄 Best as a Squad Option, Not a Starter

That’s not to say Joel Piroe has no place at the club. As a squad player, especially against weaker Premier League sides or in domestic cup competitions, he still offers value. He can come off the bench, poach goals, and give the team an alternative when chasing a game. But as the main striker in a survival or mid-table campaign? It’s a stretch.

Leeds United need a forward who can:

  • Lead the line with intensity

  • Link with midfielders in quick transitions

  • Defend from the front

  • Thrive in physical and tactical battles

Right now, Piroe simply doesn’t tick enough of those boxes.

🔚 Final Thoughts

Joel Piroe is a Championship-level striker with an eye for goal, but Leeds United will need to evolve past him if they want to compete and survive in the Premier League. It’s not a question of quality—it’s about fit. And in the Premier League, especially for promoted teams, having the right fit up top can be the difference between survival and relegation.
