Transfer Mayhem! Fabrizio Romano Reveals How Leeds Lost Out on Shocking £30m Deal in Final Hour

by Alex Matthews

Leeds United fans were left stunned this week as Sunderland swooped in and stole one of their top summer targets, Habib Diarra, right from under their noses.

The Strasbourg midfielder had been in talks with Leeds for weeks, and many thought he was heading to Elland Road.

But now, it’s been confirmed that Sunderland have won the race, agreeing a £30 million deal for the young star.

Diarra Deal Shocks Leeds Supporters

The move came as a big surprise. Leeds had made an offer of £24 million, thinking it would be enough to get the deal done.

But Sunderland went bigger and faster. They offered £30 million and booked a medical, sealing the deal before Leeds could react.

Top journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the story, saying the Black Cats were always ahead in the final stages.

It’s a big blow for Daniel Farke and the Leeds board, who had been planning to make Diarra a key part of the midfield next season.

Why Leeds Didn’t Get the Deal Done

According to transfer expert Graeme Bailey, Leeds liked Diarra a lot, but they never seriously tried to match Sunderland’s £30m bid.

Bailey said: “Leeds held talks and thought about coming back with a better offer, but Sunderland were already way ahead. They acted fast and smart.”

That hesitation cost Leeds badly, as Diarra was clearly ready to move to the Premier League just not to Yorkshire.

A Huge Signing for Sunderland

At just 20 years old, Diarra has already captained Strasbourg and is seen as a top talent. He plays as a box-to-box midfielder and brings both energy in defence and quality going forward.

He even impressed recently in Senegal’s 3-1 win over England, showing Leeds fans exactly what they’re missing.

This signing shows Sunderland’s intent. They’re not just in the Premier League to survive, they’re there to compete.

What’s Next for Leeds?

Missing out on Diarra hurts, no doubt. He was seen by many as the “perfect fit” for Farke’s system.

But Leeds must move quickly now. One possible name being mentioned is Douglas Luiz, though he would also come with a big price tag.

The club still needs a creative, hard-working midfielder and with Premier League survival on the line, there’s no time to waste.
