It looks like Illan Meslier’s time at Leeds United is almost over.
The French goalkeeper has fallen out of favour, and new signing Lucas Perri could be the man to take his place between the sticks when the Premier League kicks off.
From Number One to the Sidelines
Meslier, now 25 years old, used to be Leeds United’s main goalkeeper.
But last season, things started to go wrong for him. He made a few big mistakes in goal, and those errors cost Leeds in important matches.
Because of that, manager Daniel Farke decided to drop him and use Karl Darlow instead.
That change helped Leeds finish the season strongly and win the Championship title in dramatic style.

Now, Meslier has slipped even further down the pecking order.
For the pre-season match against AC Milan in Dublin, he wasn’t even included in the travelling squad.
This has made many fans believe that Leeds are preparing to sell him before the transfer window closes at the end of August.
Some think the club might be keeping him out of games to make sure he doesn’t get injured, which could ruin a potential transfer.
Lucas Perri Set to Take Over
The arrival of Lucas Perri from Lyon is a clear sign of change at Elland Road.
The 27-year-old Brazilian is known for his sharp reflexes and ability to make close-range saves, an area Meslier has often struggled with.
Perri also plays the “sweeper keeper” role well, coming off his line quickly to stop danger before it reaches the goal.
This is exactly the kind of style that modern managers like Farke want from their keepers.
Last season in France’s Ligue 1, Perri had an impressive record:
- 33 appearances
- 72.5% save rate
- 10 clean sheets
- Over six goals prevented
Fans are already excited to see him in action when Leeds start their Premier League season at home against Everton on 18 August.
Time for Meslier to Decide
With Perri expected to be the number one, Meslier now faces a big decision.
He could stay and fight for his place, but with two other keepers ahead of him, chances look slim.
A move away from Leeds might give him the fresh start he needs to rebuild his confidence and career.
For now, all signs point to Meslier leaving in the coming weeks.
If that happens, it will be the end of an era for a player who once looked like Leeds United’s long-term answer in goal but has sadly seen his career at Elland Road fade away.
