Leeds United have been busy in the summer transfer market, bringing in seven new faces after going up to the Premier League.
But now, the transfer work has slowed right down, and fans are getting worried.
The first game of the season against Everton is just around the corner, and the squad still feels short in attack.
Manager Daniel Farke has made it clear, Leeds need more attacking players.
He’s not happy with the options he’s got right now, saying they are weaker than last season in the Championship.
He wants a striker, a winger, and an attacking midfielder before the window shuts.
Leeds Face Tough Battle for Midfield Target
One name Leeds have been watching this summer is Mateus Fernandes from Southampton.
The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder is highly rated and is expected to play in the Premier League again this season.
But there’s a big problem, West Ham are ready to swoop in first.
Reports say the Hammers are set to put in their first bid for Fernandes any day now.
West Ham boss Graham Potter has made him his number one midfield target, and Southampton know they will likely lose him.
However, the Saints aren’t letting him go on the cheap. They want around £30 million for him, even though they were relegated last season.
Leeds Can’t Match West Ham’s Push
Leeds do like Fernandes and think he could become a top player in the future.
But right now, the club simply can’t afford to spend £30m on a midfielder when the squad needs attacking power more than anything.
With so much focus on getting goals into the team, chasing Fernandes just isn’t realistic.
Leeds have plenty of players in central midfield already, so spending big there would not make sense unless someone leaves first.
Time Running Out for Leeds
The Whites are now in a tricky spot. If they don’t act quickly, they could miss out on several key targets in the final weeks of the window.
West Ham are moving fast for Fernandes, and once again it shows that other clubs are ready to pounce while Leeds are still making up their mind.
For now, all eyes will be on whether Leeds can get the attacking signings they desperately need before the window shuts.
If they don’t, Farke’s fears about competing in the Premier League could become very real.
