Leeds United are sitting 15th in the Premier League right now. They are six points clear of the relegation zone. For a side many tipped to struggle badly this season, that is not bad at all.
They are also through to the fifth round of the FA Cup, where they will face Norwich City. That shows this team is fighting on more than one front.
But despite this, former manager and pundit Tim Sherwood has made a comment that has upset many Leeds supporters. He called Leeds “average” while praising striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin for his goals this season.
That word average has not gone down well at Elland Road.
Sherwood’s Claim About Leeds
Speaking on Sky Sports, Sherwood said Calvert-Lewin has done well and finally stayed fit. He admitted the striker is scoring regularly now.
But he also said the forward is doing it for an “average” Leeds side.
That is the part that has angered fans.
Yes, Leeds are not in the top half. Yes, they have lost games this season. But to call them average ignores what they have achieved so far.
They were written off at the start of the campaign. Many said they would go straight back down. Some even had them finishing bottom.
Now they are outside the bottom three, ahead of big clubs, and still fighting strongly.

Daniel Farke Has Turned It Around
Manager Daniel Farke deserves credit. At the start of the season, Leeds were finding it hard to score. Calvert-Lewin was not firing straight away.
But Farke changed the system. He adjusted the formation to suit his striker better. Since that tweak, Leeds have looked sharper going forward.
Calvert-Lewin has been banging in goals. Confidence has grown across the squad. The team looks more settled now.
Leeds have picked up results against strong sides this season. They have taken points from clubs like Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United. Those are not average results.
You do not get points off top teams by being average.
The Table Tells Its Own Story
After 26 matches, Leeds have 30 points. That puts them 15th. Below them are clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest, who are also fighting.
There is pressure at many clubs in the bottom half. Some are in real crisis mode.
Leeds, by contrast, looks stable. They may not be perfect, but they are organised and competitive.
For a promoted side, being six points clear is a solid position. Survival is the main aim. If they stay up comfortably, that is success.
Calling that average feels harsh.
Calvert-Lewin’s Big Impact
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been key. The 28-year-old striker struggled with injuries in the past. That stopped him from building rhythm.
This season, he has stayed fit. That has made all the difference.
He holds the ball up. He wins headers. Most importantly, he scores.
But strikers do not score alone. The midfield must supply. The defence must keep games tight. The whole team must work hard.
So if Calvert-Lewin is shining, it is because the team is functioning properly around him.
That is not average. That is an improvement.
Leeds Fans Hit Back
Leeds supporters are known for passion. They back their team loudly at home and away.
Many fans feel pundits still judge Leeds based on old views. They think some experts refuse to admit the club has improved under Farke.
Sherwood is entitled to his opinion. That is football. But supporters believe the results speak louder.
Leeds have shown fight. They have shown belief. They have shown they can mix it with bigger sides.
That is why fans feel the “average” tag is unfair.
Survival Is the Goal
At the end of the day, Leeds are not chasing the title. They are not pushing for Europe. They are fighting to stay in the Premier League.
Right now, they are doing that job.
If they keep this form and continue picking up points, they will survive. And if they survive, this season will be remembered as strong progress.
So maybe the better word is not average.
Maybe the better word is resilient.
And if Leeds keep proving people wrong, the critics will have to change their tune soon enough.
