Since being released from Leeds United in the summer, speculation has been quiet on Patrick Bamford and his next move.
The former Leeds striker left the club shortly before deadline day approached. It metaphorically signalled the end of an era, cutting ties loose on the good times under Marcelo Bielsa.
Bamford was ostracised from the team by manager Daniel Farke, who made it public knowledge that Bamford would not be a part of his plans this season.
There were talks that the former Middlesborough man could move to MLS, or in recent days, reports suggested that he could move to Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United.
Move ‘Very Close’ For Bamford
According to journalist Matteo Moretto, Spanish side Getafe are very close to signing free agent Bamford.
La Liga’s strict Financial Fair Play rules have been publicised most by Barcelona’s failures to register players in recent years. However, the domestic rules have affected several clubs as recent as this summer.
Getafe struggled to register six of their new summer signings, and had to offload striker Christantus Uche to free funds for themselves.
Uche was a target for Leeds, before moving to Premier League side Crystal Palace for £17million in the last few days of the summer transfer window.
In their last match, Los Azulones lost 3-0 against FC Barcelona. They had former Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood, who grew up in West Yorkshire, on their books a few years ago.
The idea of having a household English name seems to be something they want to replicate, as it is highly marketable. Whilst Bamford is not as popular of a figure as he was once, he can create a buzz in Spain should he be able to remain injury-free.
Getafe have started the season well, with nine points from their first five games. Under manager Jose Bordalas, the club operate in a 5-3-2 setup. Bamford would be expected to play as deputy to the starting striker Borja Mayoral and Adrian Liso.
Bamford could come up against former teammates Largie Ramazani, Raphinha and Mateo Joseph this campaign, who all ply their trade in Spain’s top flight.
